Natural Paving's Classicstone ™ riven natural limestone offers an exquisite naturally rippled surface and a delicate color palette. The colors and textures have formed naturally since time began which give each skillfully crafted piece its own wonderfully unique qualities. This hand split naturally riven paving has fettled, hand-cut edges.
Steel blue has matte shades of light blue-grey and very occasional copper
Color Variation
Lightly Varied
This paving has a low amount of color and shading variation present within the range, however will gradually lighten in sunlight over time
Water Absorbency
Low Absorption
During tests, this paving absorbs less than 0.2% water when fully saturated. The lower the water absorption, the lower the risk of algae growth and staining. By comparison, concrete paving has an average water absorption of 6%
Flexural Strength
Good
During testing, this paving showed flexural strength of 26.1 Mpa. The flexural strength value shows how much bending stress a paving unit can be put under before it breaks and the higher the number, the stronger the paving. By comparison, concrete paving has an average flexural strangth of 5 Mpa
Frost Resistance
Great
During a repeated test cycle of freezing to -40 degrees Fahrenheit, followed by thawing, this paving only lost 0.8 Mpa of flexural strength. This result demonstrates excellent paving resilience
Slip Resistance
Low Risk
This paving has a slip resistance PTV rating of 50 when dry and 42 when wet. A pendulum is used to swing across the stone to determine friction. The rougher the surface, the more the pendulum slows and the higher the value
There are many types of natural stone available, so it is important to choose the right natural stone for you.
Natural Paving's stone has been tested by a lab in the US and has far surpassed all ASTM requirements for paver material.
The most recent tests completed on the Classicstone range included:
- PSI (Compressive Strength ASTM C140-15), scored an average value of 15,260. The is the amount of pressure per square inch that may be applied before the stone breaks
- Absorption Rate (ASTM C140-15), scored an average value of 1.2%. This is a very good value as a low absorption rate is crucial to prevent the stone holding onto water, especially in colder climates.
- Coefficient of Friction Rate (ASTM C140-15), scored within a range of 1.46 when dry and 0.94 when wet.
Furthermore, all products from Natural Paving are CE marked to ensure they meet with strict EU regulations that were introduced in 2013. European standards EN1341 (flagstones), EN1342 (pavers) and EN1343 (kerbs) specify the requirements and test methods for each of these. The CE testing covers areas similar to ASTM including water absorbency, flexural strength and frost resistance.
All natural stone products have been tested to show the various properties of each stone and how it is likely to react under different circumstances.
Brand Information
Established in 2004, Natural Paving Products (UK) Ltd identified a gap in the market for high quality, ethically sourced natural stone to the domestic hardscape market. Taking an early lead in this field the company quickly began supplying to builders merchants and contractors UK wide.

Material Information
Natural Stone Characteristics:
All natural stone products are unique and will vary in color and texture, often showing distinctive markings, minor imperfections and may include mineral deposits such as iron and quartzite. Sizes are nominal and may vary. The jointing allowance is often included in the individual slab sizes and contribute to the overall pack coverage. The product images shown are as accurate as photographic processes allow and may appear differently in accordance with lighting conditions and screen calibration in addition to the natural variation occurring between batches. Images may not be a true representation of a particular product size or laying pattern. Descriptions provided offer a combination of the manufacturer's and our own opinion of the product's characteristics and features.
Limestone Description:
Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock formed mainly from calcium carbonate. This is often as a result of the accumulation of shell, coral and algal matter formed in the clear, warm shallow marine waters. Natural limestone paving has a textured feel and a gently undulating, lightly rippled surface. It usually has hand-fettled / chiselled edges or may also be sawn straight and tumbled. Its colors are far more consistent across each slab than sandstone.
- Cleft Limestone This type of limestone has an uneven, cleft, gently riven surface texture with occasional ridges and the edges of the slabs are usually hand-chiselled and tapered with the larger face of the slab to be laid uppermost. This limestone may show slight variation on the thickness, usually ranging between quarter inch either way.
- Tumbled Limestone This type of limestone has an uneven, cleft, gently riven surface texture that has then been artificially aged to make the appearance softer and more aged. This process smoothes the surface to provide a more gentle cleft texture and slightly rounds the edges of the stone to give the appearance of a stone that is much older than it actually is making it suitable for period homes where a new stone would look out of place. This limestone may show slight variation on the thickness, usually ranging between quarter inch either way.
Limestone Colors:
Natural limestone paving is offered in three key color groups:
Steel Blue which is a mid cool blue-gray colour with occasional light gray and copper tones, Sahara, which is predominantly buttermilk buff tones with light grey and occasional copper tones and Charcoal, which is a dark gray to black color that gradually lightens in sunlight to become a warm mixed grey color.
