Understanding Our Products

Our range of paving is designed to suit all garden styles and tastes and comes in a variety of finishes, sizes and colors to choose from. To ensure you understand the terminology used on our website, we have provided a list of the common terms below:

Riven or Cleft This paving has a natural, split surface or edge finish which appears irregular and slightly rippled or chiselled in appearance. The stone is generally split along its natural grain for a gently rippled effect.

Tumbled / Rumbled or Aged This paving starts as a cleft or riven finish, but is then artificially aged to give the stone the appearance of flags that have been weather-beaten and walked over for several centuries. This makes the paving ideally suited to older style properties or those where an established appearance is required.

Sawn / Smooth Paving with a smooth or sawn surface finish will be flat on the surface, making it especially suitable for contemporary style hardscaping. This finishing process smoothes away the naturally rippled surface to create a finish that is smooth to the touch. If the paving has sawn edges, then these will be cut with a fairly straight edge instead of a naturally wavy finish, again, suiting a contemporary design or those where the edge will be visible.

Eased Edge This paving has a straight sawn, edge which has then been chamfered or lightly bevelled to take off the sharpness of the corners.

Chiselled Edge The edges of this paving have a naturally, handcut or fettled edge to give a soft, irregular appearance.

Bullnosed Edge The edge style of this paving is finished with a half-rounded appearance which is ideal for step coping or around the edge of a pool.

Calibrated / Gauged Thickness This paving is cut to a regulated thickness which includes a small margin of dimensional tolerances. The surface appearance of the stone is unaffected by the gauged thickness, however by have regaulated dimensions makes the installation process quicker and easier.

Project Packs / Mixed Size Packs This paving comes in premixed packs containing a range of different size paving slabs to enable easy installation of paving in patterns to suit instead of all the slabs being the same shape and size.

Single Size / Individual Size Packs This paving is available in packs containing one precut size of slab for applications when a uniform appearance is desirable.

Circle Kits These are specialist feature kits comprising precut pieces of paving that form a circle feature in addition to a perimeter kit to convert the circle to a square if preferred. The squaring kit is ideal for inserting the circle feature within a larger patio area, however the circle may be used as a standalone feature with or without the outer squaring kit.

Natural Sandstone This paving is formed from solid pieces of natural sandstone, precut into specific sizes to ease installation. It is hard-wearing and unlikley to wear through for several centuries! Sandstone has a variety of beautiful shades that are often subtle when dry and more vivid when wet.

Natural Limestone This paving is formed from solid pieces of natural limestone, precut into specific sizes to ease installation. Limestone is hard-wearing and has a subtle blend of colors. The very dark grey shades of limestone will gradually lighten in sunlight.

PorcelainThis paving is slip resistant and exceptionally hard-wearing. It is also almost completely non-porous which means it is very easy to keep clean!
